『宝島』や『ジキル博士とハイド氏』で有名なスティーブンソンの短編集。1882年に出版された The New Arabian Night は2巻本であるが、上記では1巻の内容のみを記載した。というのは、1巻と2巻はまったく別物だから。1巻の内容は1878年から "Later-Day Arabian Night" の題で雑誌に連載されたもので、基本的にはボヘミアの王子フロリゼルの冒険譚となっている。ミステリ、ではない。だがこれは読む価値はあると思うぞ。特に前半の自殺クラブ。
時は19世紀末、場所はロンドン。ボヘミアの王子フロリゼルは街で出会った青年から「自殺クラブ」の存在を教えられる。この世に、そして人生に飽いた人々が自分の生命をもてあそぶ場所。王子が乗り込んだ自殺クラブでは、毎夜一人の会員が死を迎えていた...
光文社文庫版『クイーンの定員』には自殺クラブの1だけが載っているのだが、この後会長の逆襲もあるのでぜひ続きを読んでみよう。

一方、2巻の内容は 連載"Later-Day Arabian Night" とは全く別に雑誌に掲載された、独立した4つの話である。1巻は各話の最後のパラグラフでアラビア人の語り手の存在が示唆されているのだが、2巻にはそのような話の繋がりを示唆する記述もない。

1については英語の対訳本が何度か出ているようだが、2006年出版のものも現時点で既に入手不可能。オンライン上に「砂丘の冒険」というタイトルで翻訳している（進行中）方がいるので、これに期待した方がよさそうです。
